Major French wine styles: Bordeaux

With their about 8 billion bottles of wine produced every year, the French wine history goes back to the 6th century BC. Rest assured that quite some quality wine is being produced in France. Over the centuries, several wine style developed that are now being copied all over the world. Here are a few and their likes we have in our range. In this newsletter edition we start with the Bordeaux.

The Bordeaux is the largest wine growing area and produces mainly red wines. Most are blends, strictly produced from the following local grapes. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the primarily used grapes. Other grapes used to complete the blends are the Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and to a lesser extent Carménère. The choice of grapes and their amounts used in the mix are not prescribed, but are the judgement of the winemaker, establishing his/her signature. Note that the prime label will indicate the region and the Chateau (Estate) and not the grapes.

Typical Bordeaux style blends we sell are the Grand Rouge the Meritage and the Cabernet Sauvignon / Merlot blends.

Passport Series Limited Release extraordinary quality. Few kits available

The first of the Passport limited release series arrived December. Just a few kits left. Petit Verdot produces a bold, well structured wine. Expect intense color and aromas of vanilla, cedar and smoke, followed by ripe cherry and blackberry flavors. This full bodied wine has warm undertones of mocha, firm tannins with a rich and robust finish.

The January arrivals in the Passport series are promising toppers too. The Brunello Montalcino Style brings a full bodied red wine to your glass with velvety texture. Smooth tannins and a bouquet of leather, tobacco, cranberries and ripe cherry. If you want to try the first, buy a bottle in the liquor store. Be prepared to reach deep. Don’t wait too long.

The Pinot Gris from Willamette Valley in Oregon provides a dry to off-dry (made to your preference) medium bodied wine. Aromatic with lemon, green apple and floral notes with flavors of pear, mango and tropical fruit.

Most kits are reserved, some extra kits are ordered in case you have missed the pre-order deadline. Will not last long.
